Birkenstock slowly slipped back into the fashion circuit in 2012, and while at the time their comeback was overshadowed (literally!) by the craze for stacked creepers and flatforms, this season, they have made their official return ! The most innovative designers have not only been wearing them to take their final bows, but have been making awarding them cult-shoe status by styling them in their RTW collections.
Comfort has often been overlooked by fashionistas, many preferring elegance and forward thinking designs over cushioned soles and natural leathers, but the fash pack have quickly taken to these clunky, quasi-orthopedic shoes. It can’t be denied that styling these fugly sandals can be a sartorial challenge, but worn with the right outfit, Birkenstock come into their own and become the perfect, irrelevant antidote to seasonal edgy pieces, and equally toughen up girly summer dresses. We think they look best in neutrals or classic black and whites, but if you’re feeling more brave, why not try metallic?
