With loads of on-trend colours, you’re sure to find the perfect shade to start the summer season on the right foot. But what’s a pretty pedicure without some new summer sandals to complete the look? For SS14, designers have been gone back to the drawing board, and created sandals that can be worn from day to night, with smaller heels, flat soles in simple yet modern designs. Now is the time to say goodbye to towering heels and hello to Normcore comfort! Need some new season styling inspiration? Read on to discover the 4 trends to welcome into your summer wardrobe…

City

city look

Urban and effortless are this trend’s buzzwords. A structured dress, a shirt with the sleeves rolled up, a tailored blazer, or the summer staple of highwaisted jean shorts, will keep this look stylish and smart.

It can be tricky to perfect summer style in the city, but low heeled sandals will keep you comfortable (and confident) from the boardroom to after work drinks. As the sandal shape is elegant and feminine, keep the materials smart (leather, nubuck) to be office appropriate. This style is sophisticated, chic (without being fussy) and perfect for keeping cool in the summer heat.

Summer brights : citrus colours, berry shades and corals. Add a pop of colour to your look and embrace fizzy rainbow colours, but avoid matching your nail polish to your sandals. Colour clashing is in, so why not try an orange nail with pink shoes or vice versa?

Back to basics

back to basics style

Embrace romantic summer dresses in pretty florals, or go for intricate lace detailing for a subtle play of transparency and embroidery.

This trend works best with the basic, almost puritan aesthetic of monk sandals, in classic, nautral colours and tans (camel, cocoa, hazelnut, khaki) Soles should be extra flat, in soft, supple leathers, with thick straps or braided ties.

Earthy tones : Deep, dark opaque shades are chic and discrete. Play with contrasts and choose a polish a few shades darker than your skin tone to avoid looking washed out.

Minimalism

Minimalism is everywhere this summer. From the runways to street style blogs, there’s no hiding that less is more for SS14. For a minimal look from head to toe, styling should be just as simple as your sandals: monochrome shades and sportszear basics without logos or detailing. Strong, simple shapes add structure to the look, which can be accentuated by playing with proportions and volumes.  We love luxe leather shorts or skirts for toughening up the look.

Shoe-wise, stick to black, white or monochrome, and stay clear of embellishment or unnecessary detailing. Soles should be completely flat and stacked to create clean, graphic lines.

Pastels : In contrast with  the bold and strong monochrome palette, powder pastels add a discrete softness to the look, and are perfect for adding freshness to what can be sometimes be a heavy style.

Comfort

Being cool and comfortable has never been so chic. Want this style for yourself? Take inspiration from masculine trends and preppy classics – straight leg jeans and tops in comfy materials like jersey and flannel are key to nailing this trend. If you want to toughen your look, add a leather jacket. The key normcore piece? White jeans!

No longer the shoe of hippies and tourists, sliders and clunky sandals are being spotted on fashionistas everywhere. Inspired by the classic Birkenstock: mules, sturdy foot support and  ergonomic soles,  all signal a return to cool and comfortable footwear in on-trend minimalist hues: white, black and silver.

Mermaid Colours : Azure blue shades, navy blue, aqua green and also golden metallics. This unlikely pairing of rich, luxurious colours adds glamour to this “off-duty” model style. Similar advice as before: avoid metallic shades with metallic sandals, and go for a a deep blue to contrast with your slides.

You’ll probably have noticed by now that we haven’t talked much about the most classic nail colour of them all – red! If we’re being honest, red goes with anything, and while trends come and go, vampy burgundy and pillarbox red are timeless. Nailmatic boasts some really cool fiery shades – from berry reds to the quirky red /orange shades, we love them all! If you’re wearing red sandals, matching red nails can look a bit harsh, so think of updating your look with a nude nail or classic french manicure.

And not forgetting…
