.) They’re everywhere. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few months, it’s impossible to deny that the Stan Smith sneaker is the sartorial star of spring. Take a look around you: seen on both guys and girls, in the street and on the catwalks – Stan Smiths are hot hot hot!
.) It’s a fighter. It was a close call for the iconic tennis shoe when Adidas announced in 2012 that they were planning to end production of this 90s staple. It’s still unsure whether it was the online outcry and lobbying of fans that swayed Adidas to bring back these classics, but thankfully, Stan Smith made its long awaited comeback last January – and we couldn’t be happier!
.) They go with everything. One of the strengths of this white trainer is its pure and minimal design. Fashionistas wear it with playsuits, a riot of colours or with printed co-ords, while the minimalistas have claimed it as their own too, pairing them with slouchy boyfriend jeans and bomber jackets.
.) It’s proof that a sneaker can be both casual AND feminine. Remember that ultra-sexy photo of Gisele Bundchen and her Stan Smiths that was published in French Vogue last year? Okayyy, so she may have been completely naked, but nonetheless, wow! Lace ups have never looked so good!
.) They’re timeless. Launched in 1973, the Adidas Originals Stan Smith has not aged one bit. If anything, the more you wear them, the more they grow in character.
.) They’re nostalgic. Wearing shoes that we wore when we were teenagers is wonderfully nostalgic, and puts a real spring in our step! Whether you were trying to emulate your favourite rapper, or just wanted to get in on the hype, you’re bound to have owned a pair of Stan Smiths back in the day. Welcome them back into your wardrobe and let the memories come flooding back!
.) They’re generational. At the time, it was tennis star Stan Smith who was the Adidas poster boy making these shoes look just as slick on court and off. He’s the guy you can see sketched on the trainer’s tounge! Fresh times, fresh faces, today it’s indie-cool singer Sky Ferreira who is the face of the Stan Smith comeback.
.) They are comfortable. Set aside all its `it-shoe’ airs and graces, the Stan Smith is one seriously comfy shoe.
.) They’ve made their mark with the fashion elite. What was Phoebe Philo, the cool creative director of Céline, wearing when she took her bow at her PFW show? You guessed it – Stan Smiths. And she’s in good company. Rapper and fashion fanatic, Kanye West has a pair too. Who knows, maybe we’ll see Kim in a pair next?
.) The devil is in the detail. At first glance, there’s not a whole lot going on with Stan Smiths. But think of them as a blank canvas to express yourself. Choose from leather logos in blue, pink or green, decide between velcro or lace, wedge or plimsoll, or let your creative side loose like Pharrell and have fun customising yours!
