The end of the summer holidays are nearing to an end and with September just around the corner, there is one thing on every parent’s mind; preparation for their little ones to go back to school! After running around in sandals and flip-flops all summer, they would all love to keep their feet out in the open, but now the time has come to buy a brand new pair of school shoes.
Here are a few hints and tips on what to look for, what to avoid and how to attack the school shoe gauntlet head on…
Avoid synthetic shoes!
For the comfort and well being of their little feet (as well as our bigger ones!) nothing beats shoes made from natural materials. Cotton, rubber and leather all fair much better in comparison with synthetic styles. Not only are they more ecologically friendly, but they allow the foot to breathe more, there are less risks of inflammation, over perspiration, odour and allergies.
It may be a little more costly, but the investment in your child’s feet is definitely worth the cost!
Velcro, elastic and buckles VS laces
For younger ones, there is no real question about it… if they don’t know how to do their laces by themselves, it is better to invest in a pair without them, as they can put these ones on without your help. Just think of the time you’ll save in the morning before the school run. Velcro shoes are the first step towards independence for them (and it conveniently avoids extra work for you!)
For older children, what better incentive is there for them to learn how to do their laces, then with a brand new smart pair of shoes?
The right size
When it comes to kids’ shoes, we always tend to buy shoes a size bigger than they actually are, with the idea that they will grow into them. This is not always a good solution. More often than not they risk losing them or twisting their ankles. Plus, there is more risk of the shoes tearing, or losing their shape. All in all, it’s not the best idea.
To get the most comfort, the perfect shoe should be neither be too loose or too tight – just the right size.
The perfect shopping basket
In the ideal shopping basket there should be a pair of leather shoes, ankle boots are best for boys and little button ankle boots for girls (it’s best to save pretty ballerina shoes for special occasions). Always aim to get a pair that fastens easily. Be sure to add a pair of sports shoes in for P.E, Velcro ones if possible.
